I am a Title I Reading Specialist at Memorial. I work with all of Kindergarten in the morning and two of the four 2nd grade classes in the afternoon.
We work in small groups that are based on needs. The groups are typically have no more than 4 students in a groups. Throughout the year I work on skills that students need to become better readers and writers. I begin the building a strong phonological awareness. This includes working on recognizing rhyming, clapping out syllables in words, and identifying beginning sounds to name a few. I also incorporate letter and sounds identification practice. Once students have a good handle of most of these skills we work on cvc words and sight words. Then I begin to introduce Guided Reading. While working on any of the skills listed above, I try to do a lot of practice and try to make it hands on as much as possible to help the students remember .
2nd Grade- (Mrs.Campenni and Mrs. Belles)
As we begin the reading block, students will be grouped based on need and skill.
During the year, students will receive support with a program called Leveled Literacy. This program allows students to increase their reading skills and strategies using books and materials to reinforce skills taught in the small group.
